Course content

This is a broad introduction to what may be called the American national ideology - or Americanism, the prevailing national value system - which unifies a culturally very heterogeneous mix of peoples into one, single nation.

Learning outcome

To provide insight into the basic beliefs and values which constitute the ideological foundation of the American nation, including dominant self-perceptions of Americans as a national entity, with some references to the role of the United States on the world scene after World War Two.

Formal prerequisite knowledge

Admission to the master program in North American area studies, LAP or other relevant master programs.

Recommended previous knowledge

The course assumes a good proficiency in written and oral English.


The course is taught throughout the semester with 2 hours per week, 28 hours in all. Half-way through the semester there is a period of one (autumn term) or two (spring term) reading weeks without teaching, to be used for individual study and work on assignments. 70% attendance is required.


Students must turn in an essay of 5 standard pages on an assigned topic by a stated deadline during the semester. Once the course requirements have been fulfilled, they remain valid for the current and the two consecutive semesters when the course is given. The evaluation is based on a take home three-day home exam.

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

The results will be found on the StudentWeb within three weeks after the exam.

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
