Course content
This course introduces you to Systemic Functional grammar, which is a theory that aims to account for the use of language as a vehicle for communication between people in social and cultural contexts. The theory focuses on the functions of language in representing states and activities, in interaction and in creating discourse. It raises your awareness of how language users convey meaning through their choice of words and grammatical structures in specific situations. It includes analyses of authentic texts.
Learning outcomes
After completing this course you will have:
- learned to describe the lexical, grammatical and cohesive structure of texts;
- incrased your ability to reflect on how the resources of the English language are employed in different types of texts;
- learned why language users choose one wording over another to better reach their communicative goals.

The examination in this course is not available for external candidates. Only students admitted to the course may sit for the examination.
Prerequisites
Formal prerequisites
The course assumes ENG1100 - English Grammar, an introduction, ENG1111 - The English Language. Awareness and Writing Skills (An introduction) or similar knowledge.
Recommended prior knowledge
The course assumes a good proficiency in written and oral English
Overlap
This course overlaps with ENG4151 - Systemic Functional Grammar, introduction.
Teaching
Seminar, two hours per week for 14 weeks, 28 hours in all.
The student must hand in 2 assignments during the course by set deadlines. Both assignments must be approved by the course teacher for the student to be able to take the exam.
Attendance is an obligatory class requirement (80%).
Teaching takes place throughout the semester.
Exam information
The final exam is a 4-hour written exam.

Assessment and grading
The result will be available on the StudentWeb within three weeks after the exam.
Course grades are awarded on a descending scale using alphabetic grades from A to E for passes and F for fail. Read more about the grading system .

Possibility of make-up exams and re-takes
You can usually resit an exam, but the conditions depend on whether you had a valid reason for absence from the regular exam. Read more about resitting an exam .
Withdrawing from exams and limits on re-takes
A student can sit for this exam up to 3 times. If a student wishes to withdraw from the exam, s/he must do this in StudentWeb at least two weeks prior to the first day of the exam. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit for the exam.
Exam options for students with special needs
Students may apply for access to alternative exam resources or exam forms on the basis of chronic illness and/or special needs that create a marked disadvantage to other students in the exam situation. Mothers who are breastfeeding may apply for extra time to complete the exam.
