CONT4504 – Intercontextual Theology (I): Issues, Models and Theoretical Tools

Course content

Drawing from recent developments in theology represented by contextual theologies, liberation- and feminist theologies and interreligious dialogue, together with the insights provided by postcolonial and globalization studies, this course introduces issues in and theoretical models for intercontextual theology. It focuses on the particular challenges that is posed to a theology that is attentive both to its local and global contexts at the same time as it is committed to the cause of marginalized persons and groups in the community.

  • Contextualisation of theology: background, history and main tenets
  • Contextual theologies: issues, contexts and models
  • Intercontextual theology

Learning outcome

Through this course, students will have obtained critical insight in the hermeneutical process involved in the contextualisation of theology, have gained good knowledge about the variety of contemporary contextual theologies, and have developed skills in working contextually and inter-contextually with central theological problems and social challenges to churches and faith communities.

Prerequisites

Recommended previous knowledge

The course presupposes introductory knowledge of systematic theology. The language of the compulsory reading list is normally English, but German and Norwegian will be accepted for parts of the reading list.

Teaching

The course will be given throughout the whole semester with lectures and seminar teaching. Two obligatory short papers are to be presented in class during the semester. Active participation in the seminar is required.

Examination

Term paper approx. 4000 words.

The course has a digital examination conducted in Inspera.

Use of sources and citation

You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
