The Norwegian Human Rights Institution (NIM) invites you to the launch of its new report, 'Due Diligence in Transition', which examines companies' human rights, climate and environmental obligations under the EU CSDDD and the Norwegian Transparency Act. The event will include a presentation of the report's main findings and a panel discussion with representatives from business, academia and civil society.

Until recently, respecting human rights and the environment in global value chains was something companies were expected to do, not legally required to do. That began to change as countries such as France, Germany and Norway passed mandatory due diligence laws. The EU took this a step further with the CSDDD, which from 2029 will extend due diligence obligations to large companies across Europe. Earlier this year, however, several key aspects of the CSDDD were weakened through the EU's so-called omnibus package, creating uncertainty over the scope and content of the remaining provisions.

NIM's report finds that despite these changes, the CSDDD still imposes extensive obligations on companies, not only to identify and assess human rights, climate and environmental impacts, but also to take appropriate measures to address and remedy them. The report also offers concrete recommendations for the Norwegian authorities on how to transpose the Directive into Norwegian law, while retaining the strengths of the Transparency Act.

The launch is co-hosted with the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights at the University of Oslo. The project is supported by the Danish Institute for Human Rights.
