India’s Gen Z Moment?

Is the recent wave of youth-led protests the beginning of the end of the Modi era?

“Gen Z” uprisings are now a global phenomenon, with mass youth-led protests taking place in countries as diverse as Morocco, Bangladesh, Madagascar and Nepal. And judging by the scale and scope of Gen Z-led mass demonstrations in Delhi and elsewhere this year, the Gen Z phenomenon has now arrived in India.

Building on earlier student-led protests over an exam paper-leak scandal, thousands of Indian youths have taken to the streets, now criticising the country’s Hindu nationalist government for its alleged manipulation of democratic elections.

The current Gen Z movement, however, is no longer focused on just a single issue, but has become a rallying ground for many forms of discontent with the Modi government’s increasing stranglehold on India’s democratic institutions. More ominously, though, is the increasingly repressive response by the government. Thousands of protestors, including opposition leaders, have been detained, and reports of brutal police violence and makeshift detention centers continue to emerge.

In this discussion, we turn our attention to the current Gen Z-led protests and ask what they mean for the future of Indian democracy.
