Ukraine's mental health crisis

Ukraine is facing a mental health crisis of a scale Europe has not seen in decades.

The need for mental health support in Ukraine is immense. 3.7 million internally displaced persons require psychological care, veterans face both trauma and stigma, and psychosocial services are virtually non-existent outside major cities. At the same time, Ukrainian psychology training focuses primarily on individual clinical treatment, whereas the need lies in community-level interventions—in schools, voluntary organizations, and local community centers.

At this event, Ukrainian and Norwegian professionals will come together to discuss what it takes to build mental health services during wartime, how educational institutions can shoulder such a responsibility, and what Norway can learn from Ukrainian experiences regarding emergency preparedness, caregiver burnout, and services for displaced persons.

CareBridge

The event marks the launch of CareBridge, a three-year Norwegian-Ukrainian educational partnership led by the Department of Psychology at the University of Oslo (UiO) and funded by the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills (HK-dir) under the Nansen Support Programme for Ukraine. The partners are Ushynsky University in Odesa, Polissia National University in Zhytomyr, the Kyiv School of Economics, and Sumy State University.

The following will discuss this:

Meet psychology experts from the four Ukrainian universiteties, from Odesa in the South to Sumy in the North-East. They bring with them experiences from vastly different parts of the country, ranging from regions near the front lines to areas hosting large numbers of displaced persons.
