Install Microsoft Security Essentials

If you have uninstalled F-Secure, or if your computer for another reason is without virus protection, it is very important that you install virus protection before you do anything else. If you have no preferred antivirus software, we recommend that you install Microsoft Security Essentials if your computer runs Windows 7. If you use Windows 8, you should activate Windows Defender.

To install Microsoft Security Essentials:

1. Start a browser (Internet Explorer or similar), and go to this web page:

http://windows.microsoft.com/nb-no/windows/security-essentials-all-Versions

2. Select your language. Default Language at the UiO is English Language and Windows 7 64-bit, but it is possible that your home computer uses another version or language. The download page detects which country you are in, so the page will most likely be in Norwegian. It should be possible to change this setting at the bottom right of the page.

3. Run the file you have downloaded by double-clicking it.

4. Accept the license terms.

5. We recommend that you decline to join the programme for user experience. Click Next.

6. We recommend that you remove the checkmark for automatic sending of samples. Click Next.

7. Click Install.

8. Leave the checkmark for scanning of the computer after updating, and click Finish. The software will now be updated.

9. The Automatic scan for threats will start. If you see that you do not have time to finish the scan, you can click Cancel scan and start it later.
