Why choose this programme option?
Do you want to learn more about the fundamental theories of physics that shape our understanding of nature? Do you like to formulate concepts in a precise and mathematical manner? Do you want to learn to use advanced calculations in order to explain interesting phenomena? If any of this appeals to you, you should choose theoretical physics.
This programme option is the right choice if you wish to acquire a wide and advanced background in fundamental physics. As a graduated physicist you will come in contact with many different problems areas.
In order to be well prepared for handling this kind of challenges, it is convenient to have an overview of the most advanced theories used in physics. As a student of theoretical physics you will enter a stimulating study and academic environment with employees and students with a common interest in fundamental physics. In the master's thesis you will manage your own research project which will grant you insight into a part of the research frontiers in theoretical physics.
The master's thesis is carried out in close dialogue with an advisor and is a specialization within theoretical physics. The specialization depends on the advisor, but will typically be directed towards elementary particle physics and cosmology, quantum phenomena in solid state physics, or torwards complex classical physics.
