Extension for Master's students

Only in extraordinary circumstances can a Master degree student apply for extension for one or two semesters.

  • Document the reason for your extension request. (for example serious documented illness over a longer period of time)
  • The application must be completed and submitted to Knutepunktet- International Student Reception within the deadline.
    • March 1 for students expected to complete in Spring semester-June (notification of decision in April)
    • September 1 for students expected to complete in Autumn semester-December (notification of decision in October)

Extension for the two months during the summer:

Delays attributed to data collection or appointment of supervisor or other extenuating circumstances are reasons to apply for an extension.

  • You are generally only eligible to apply for an extension for two months during the summer.
  • The Loan Fund can grant summer support if the student expects to complete by August 31.
  • If you do not complete by August 31 you will not be entitled to any additional Quota support for the fall term.

Continuing as a self-financed student:

Some students are not able to complete their studies within the allotted time with Quota funding. However it is possible to continue as a self financed Master (SFM) student:

You have to:

  • Contact your department to apply for an extension of your study rights as a self funded student.
  • If your extension is granted The Quota Program Student Adviser is no longer administratively responsible for you, your department is.
  • apply for renewal of your residence permit at least one month prior to your permit expires.
  • Check the UDI requirement for renewal
  • Request a progress report that needs to be submitted to the UDI/Police in connection with the extension.
  • Obtain confirmation from the SiO Housing Office that you still have student housing.
  • The Loan Fund requires that you apply for deferment of repayment of quota loan as long as you are a self-financed student. You do this by going into Dine sider at lanekassen.no and applying for betalingsutsettelse. This is very important - otherwise you will receive bills.
