Physically Attending Participants ("Live Concert")

Volunteers in RITMO t-shirts will be assisting you throughout the concert. Please come with fully charged smartphones. You may download the MusicLab App before the concert and fill out the consent form. If you have any questions about the consent form, you may contact Simon Høffding at simon.hoffding@imv.uio.no or Dana Swarbrick at dana.swarbrick@imv.uio.no.

Streaming Participants ("Livestreamed Concert")

If you are streaming the concert, you can view the concert on Facebook or YouTube. We would like to measure your motion and experience of the concert using the MusicLab App. The app is used to measure music-related motion and collect surveys. Download at the links above. Try to come with a sufficiently charged phone. Thank you for letting us do science with your phones!

Methods for attaching the smartphone

lanyard with two elastic bands attached

The live concert audience will be using phone holders to wear their phones on their chest, but we have found that crafting phone holders is just as effective! You can take any necklace/lanyard/string that can be worn around your neck, attach two elastic bands, and insert your phone (refer to the figures).

If you do not have the ability to create a phone holder:

You could wear a shirt with a chest pocket, or if you wear a bra, you could also place the phone there. Any other methods for attaching the phone to your upper body will help the quality of the motion data. As a last resort, feel free to use your pants pocket.

Filling Surveys

Image may contain: Font, Number, Screenshot.

There is a drop down menu with all surveys on the top left of the app. Survey 0 "Physically Present Participant Number" is not relevant for streaming participants. Each survey is provided in both English and Danish so choose your preferred language. Fill survey 1 "Pre-Virtual Concert" before the concert. Make sure you press submit to send your responses. You should receive an alert that says "Form submitted successfully!". If you receive an error, please restart the app and try again. Instructions on filling the other surveys will be displayed in the livestream.

Motion Recording

To navigate to the motion tab, press the "Data" button at the bottom of the app. First, verify that you have green checkmarks next to accelerometer, gyroscope, and geolocation. If you have any red X's, try quitting and restarting the app.

To start the motion recording, press "Start Capture". Some phones' settings prevent background usage so we ask that you do not move the app to background, leave the screen on for the duration of the concert, and avoid using other apps while recording motion. You can mute notifications and dim your screen to conserve battery life. Position the phone in the holder and back on your chest. Beware, if the screen has direct contact with skin, you may accidentally quit the app. Be sure to start recording before the concert!

We will stop the motion recording before the intermission and restart it after intermission. To stop motion recording, press "STOP". You should receive an alert that says "Data sent successfully!". If you receive an error message, please email dana.swarbrick@imv.uio.no with the name of your phone model.

Note: The app uses very little data. For the duration of the concert, we estimate it will use less than 0.02 GB.
