ENG4162 – Contrastive Analysis and Learner Language
The course gives an introduction to contrastive analysis and error analysis focusing on a comparison of English and Norwegian and on the analysis of English as produced by Norwegians. The teaching draws on the following text corpora: the English-Norwegian Parallel Corpus, the Oslo Multilingual Corpus and the Norwegian component of the International Corpus of Learner English.
The aim is to give students insight into the problems of Norwegians in learning English and describe similarities and differences between English and Norwegian. Through problem-oriented exercises they will learn how to use electronic text corpora in contrastive analysis and the study of learner language.

Formal prerequisite knowledge
The course requires ENG1100 – English Grammar and ENG1102 – Translation and Practical Exercises, An Introduction (discontinued) or similar knowledge.
Recommended previous knowledge
The course assumes a good proficiency in written and oral English
This course overlaps with ENG2162 – Contrastive and Learner Language Analysis.
There will be two hours of teaching per week throughout the term, altogether 28 hours. In the middle of the term there is a two-week period free of teaching, to be used for individual study and project work. The language of instruction (and examination) is English. Students are expected to attend the course regularly and take an active part in the classes.
Students must turn in two shorter essays. The evaluation will be based on a take home exam spanning over seven days (ca. 10 standard pages). The exam is graded from A to E for pass and F for fail.
