NORAM4501 – The Equal Protection of the Laws: Individual Rights and Civil Liberties under the Constitution

Course content
This course analyzes individual rights and liberties enjoyed by American citizens and other residents of the USA in light of the U.S. Constitution and American legal traditions, with a special emphasis on the role of the U.S. Supreme Court. Its main focus will be on the post-World War Two period.
Learning outcome
The chief aim of the course is to provide solid knowledge of, and insights into, the vital roles of the U.S. Constitution, the framework of law, and the legal apparatus in modern America with regard to individual rights and liberties. Our major material sources will be articles and books within the field of constitutional history as well as post-World War Two U.S. Supreme Court records in this area.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Admission to the master program in North American Area studies, LAP or other relevant program.
Recommended previous knowledge
80-group in NORAM studies.
Teaching
The course is taught throughout the semester with 2 hours per week, 28 hours in all. There is a mid-term break (one week in autumn term, two weeks in spring term) during which the students are expected to prepare obligatory assignments (see below) and otherwise study on their own. 70% attendance is required.
Examination
Portfolio, which consists of a written paper (8 standard pages) and a 2-hour classroom exam at the end of the semester.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
The results will be found on the StudentWeb within three weeks after the exam.

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
