JOUR4422 – Foreign Affairs Journalism. The Norwegian Experience and the International Perspective

Course content
The course will analyse the development of Foreign Affairs Journalism in Norway and internationally, from the first time we may speak of such a genre and up till today. Based on the historical perspective the course’s main focus is to analyse the conditions of the Foreign Affairs Journalism today. We will invite experienced journalists to discuss different problems of the field. We will also visit significant foreign desks where the students will get an understanding of the processes that may affect the journalist’s work/function.
Learning outcome
The aim of the course is to develop the student’s skills in critical analysis and to develop an understanding of processes in the Norwegian and international Foreign Affairs Journalism.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Bachelor’s Degree or Cand.Mag.Degree in Media Studies or Journalism.
Teaching
7 lectures, 3 hours per week:
1. Introduction. Defining problems.
2. Lecture and seminar with Prof. Marc Feldtstein, George Washington Univ. and CNN correspondent Gulf War I.
3. Lecture and seminar with the former foreign correspondent Per Egil Hegge: ”Correspondance in Communist Dictatorship and Democracies. A comparison of Moscow and Washington”.
4. Visit to the foreign desk at the NRK and talks with foreign correspondents.
5.Lecture and seminar about the experience of the Norwegian war correspondance in the Irak war.
6.Lecture and seminar with the foreign desk reporter Sigrun Slapgaard and other female representatives of the Norwegian media: ”Women as War Correspondents” .
7. Vist to the foreign desk at Aftenposten.
Examination
Assignment of approx. 4000 words. ECTS-grades.
