MUS1500 – Jazz, pop and rock

This course will provide an overview of historical and analytical aspects within various genres of jazz, pop and rock music. Students will be presented a range of methods that are employed within popular music research.
The course will provide an insight into central historical, musical, and cultural aspects of jazz, rock and other western popular music forms and furnish you with knowledge relating to relevant methods and terms for the study of western popular music. You will be presented with a varied approach to popular music studies’ diverse areas of research, such as ethnography, sociology, musicology, and historical studies.

Recommended previous knowledge
Knowledge that is equivalent to MUS1101 - Elementary music theory.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
