ISSMF4205 – International Community Health: Accessibility, Equity and Human Rights
Course description
Course content
The course presents global public health issues. Important underlying themes are human rights, equity, social dimensions of health, and meeting the health needs of marginalised groups of people with a focus on child health, sexual reproductive health and rights, communicable diseases, and chronic conditions. When appropriate, examples will be taken from the Norwegian health system.
The course is particularly relevant for people who are working in health as health care professionals, policy makers, planners, and program officers in government agencies and non-governmental organisations.
An important asset in the class are the students who come from a wide variety of backgrounds: different countries, professional training, academic training, work experience, and culture. Sharing experiences and learning from each other are integral parts of the course.
Learning outcome
Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to demonstrate an understanding of global health issues, to describe and discuss the health challenges in their own countries and how these can be addressed, and to communicate and work effectively with students from other backgrounds.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
A completed Bachelor’s degree or a period of study comparable with a Norwegian Bachelor's degree from a recognised institution. Minimum academic requirements.
Applicants should have a related degree in medicine, nursing, or health sciences.
Recommended previous knowledge
Applicants should preferably be able to apply the knowledge gained in the course to their work environment. Documented professional experience may also qualify applicants even though their academic background does not match the course profile.
Teaching
The course consists of 26 lectures, 4 hours daily (9:15-13:00), Monday to Friday, for six weeks. Classroom sessions include lectures, student presentations and group work discussions. Visits to institutions in Oslo are included.
Daily attendance is expected of all participants. Students must attend a minimum of 75% of the lectures in order to take the final exam.
Examination
The course includes a final assignment. You can check your results and order transcripts in Studentweb three weeks after the assignment deadline.
Use of sources and citation
You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Explanations and appeals
Resit an examination
Candidates who have a re-scheduled or new examination are allowed take the next ordinary examination. Candidates who are re-sitting NORA exams can also re-sit the exam in the summer at the ISS exam. If you have successfully passed obligatory assignments, or other compulsory activities required before you are qualified to attend the exam, you need not re-sit these.
Only students with either valid absence (doctors note) or students who failed the exam can re-sit an exam.
Withdrawal from an examination
A student can take the class and sit for this exam up to 3 times. If a student wishes to withdraw from the exam, s/he must submit the Course Change Request Form to the ISS Reception before the exam. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit for the exam, which is the general rule at UiO.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
