Requirements

Students are expected to have prior knowledge of international law. Recommended introductory reading:

  • Antonio Cassese: International Law, Oxford University Press, 2001, or
  • Carl August Fleischer: Folkerett, Universitetsforlaget, 7th ed., 2000, or
  • Ruud & Ulfstein: Innføring i folkerett, Universitetsforlaget, 2002

Students are expected to have a thorough understanding of the following topics based on the literature, lectures and case studies:

  • The main characteristics of international environmental law
  • The role of the concept “sustainable development” in international environmental law-The main links between human rights and international environmental law
  • Main issues related to the Convention on Biological Diversity
  • Main issues related to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Kyoto Protocol and the 2001 Marrakesh Accords
  • The relationship between the rules of the World Trade Organization and trade related measures taken for environmental protection purposes
  • Main issues related to EC environmental lawIn addition, students are expected to have a thorough understanding of the cases examined during the course.
