Important information about lectures of 11-13th Nov by Jane Luu

In order to be able to follow the lectures of 11.-13. Nov, here are some IMPORTANT instructions by Jane Luu for you to follow and complete (It does not take long) BEFORE coming to class:

1)  Install python and Jupyter notebook:

https://docs.jupyter.org/en/latest/install/notebook-classic.html

(Use whatever method you like).

2) Install SAOImage DS9:

https://sites.google.com/cfa.harvard.edu/saoimageds9

We will use SAOImage DS9 to display astronomy images.  Astronomy images are almost always in FITS format. Double-click on a FITS image, and it should open in DS9 automatically.  Or you can open DS9, then open your image (under "File" menu).

I have included images for you to play with.  Both folders "ImageProcessing_ForStudents" and  "CalibrationExercise_ForStudents" (on the usual Google Drive folder) contain some of my data of the comet 2025K1.  They were taken at the 2.56m Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT), located in La Palma, the Canary Islands, Spain on Dec 2025.  These are raw images, i.e., this is how they were saved to the computer right after they were taken at the telescope.  They have not been processed in any way. By the way, NOT is always looking for new interns to work at the telescope, you should try it out if you are interested.

We will do the calibration exercise in "CalibrationExercise_ForStudents" on 12 Nov 2026 and image processing exercise in "ImageProcessing_ForStudents" on Friday 13 Nov instead of the standard group session.

If you wish, you can try to get ahead of the game by running the Jupyter notebooks in those 2 folders. There are step by step instructions.  For more information you can (1) read Lecture 7 from Claudia's notes, or (2) read the slides 3.CCDProcessing.pdf. Or you can wait until class.

You can email me if you have questions: janeluu@uio.no.

Best,
Leo and Jane
