INF9050 – Protocols and Routing in the Internet

Course content

This course looks at basic optical communication, optical routing, basic wireless communication, challenges within IP-routing, router architecture, label routing (Multi Protocol Label switching), unicast and multicast routing. It also looks at active networks, overlay networks, quality of service (ao. Diffserv, Intserv, RSVP), demands from multimedia applications and possible solutions, adaption as well as challenges using heterogeneous networks, core vs. access networks.

Learning outcome

The goal of the course is that the students have good knowledge about the scientific field routing and protocols in the Internet. Students will also have detailed knowledge within a chosen sub-area within this scientific field.

Admission

PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through Studentweb.

If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.

PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must apply for a position as a visiting student within a given deadline.

The course builds on INF3190 – Data communications (continued)/INF4190 – Data communications (discontinued)/IN270/INF240.

Overlapping courses

Teaching

Seminar, 3 hours per week, Spring. The two first hours is used for student presentations. The last hour is used to teach next week’s theme. Students are assigned to themes as soon as possible after course start.

In addition, each PhD student will be given an extended curriculum within the field/research area of the course. The syllabus must be approved by the lecturer so that the student can be admitted to the final exam.

Examination

One written part exam counting 20% and one oral exam counting 80% of the grade. All parts must be passed and all parts must be passed in the same semester.

Explanations and appeals

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

It will also be counted as one of your three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses: INF-PRI-F.
