INF-MAT4350 – Numerical linear algebra

Schedule, syllabus and examination date

Course content

Direct methods for linear equations, matrix norms and condition numbers, orthogonal transformations, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, over determined systems, singular value decomposition, iterative methods for linear systems

Learning outcome

To give students a good background in numerical methods and further training in linear algebra. The student will learn advanced tools useful for graduate studies in computational science.

Admission

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures.

Prerequisites

Recommended previous knowledge

Basic courses in introductory programming, calculus, and linear algebra

Overlapping courses

10 credits with INF-MAT3350 – Numerical linear algebra (discontinued) and 10 credits with MoD200/IN 227/IN 225

Teaching

Lectures and problem solving sessions. Mandatory assignments must be completed during the course. Rules for mandatory assignmnets.

Examination

4 hour written final examination. The mandtoryassignments must be accepted prior the exam. General information about the examination.

The Course Auditor is Trond Steihaug.

Resit an examination

This subject does not offer new examination in the beginning of the subsequent term for candidates who withdraw during an ordinary examination or fail an ordinary examination. For general information about new examination, see
/studier/admin/eksamen/sykdom-utsatt/mn/index.html and /english/studies/admin/examinations/new-exam/index.html

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

The subject is regarded equal to MoD200 when practicing exam regulations.

Other
