INF5880 – Master seminar in language technology

Course content

The seminar deals with current topics in language technology, often linked to ongoing research activities at the LNS group. The content is based on presentations from the participants and invited guests, and will vary depending on who is included.

Learning outcome

After taking INF5880 you will have:

  • knowledge about active research areas in natural language processing (NLP).
  • an understanding of central topics of the NLP research at UiO.
  • experience in presenting your own work (or the work of others).
  • experience in critically assessing experimental results.
  • experience in discussing NLP research problems with peers.

Admission

This course is only for student with INF5880 in their approved master plan agreement.

5 credits overlap with INF9880 – Ph D Seminar in Language Technology (discontinued)

Teaching

Presentation of results from their own or others' research. Every participant contributes with lectures. 2 hours every other week.

Examination

80 % attendance. Students must give at least one lecture. To pass, the following requirements need to be fulfilled
throughout the semester: Students must give at least one presentation and attend at least 80% of all seminar sessions. Furthermore, students and their supervisor(s) select two of the seminar presentations by others for more in-depth study; students must prepare a scholarly summary of the research presented and relevant background materials for these presentations, as selected by the supervisor(s). These summaries must be submitted no later than two weeks after the
seminar presentation and are approved jointly by the supervisor(s) and seminar leader(s).

Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.

Explanations and appeals

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Other

It is strongly recommended to attend the first lecture since it will be given important information.
