More about WebID

WebID is a collaboration tool that allows persons outside Feide to create their own WebID user accounts. The user can gain access to web services that support WebID. This makes it easier to collaborate with persons external to your institution.

In WebID, anyone can register and create their own WebID user. To allow the user to access a service, a Feide user must log on to WebID, create a WebID group and include those who will work together in this group, and then give the group access to the specific services.

Please note that not all services support WebID. List of supported services.

Starting collaboration

A probable situation is that a Feide user wishes to collaborate with external persons, but wishes to use a tool at UiO that requires logging on, such as Vortex or Wiki at UiO. To allow such a collaboration, the following must be done:

  1. The Feide user logs on to webid.uio.no and creates a WebID group for the collaboration.
  2. The Feide user invites people by entering the e-mail address of each of them. Each of them then receives an e-mail inviting them to join the group.
  3. Each can accept the invitation by going to the link in the e-mail and selecting one of the following:
    • Log on via Feide. The person's Feide user then becomes a member of the group.
    • Create a new WebID user. The new WebID user then becomes a member of the group.
    • Log on with an existing WebID user. If the person already has got a Web ID user, selecting this option will make that WebID user a member of the group.
  4. One person, typically the one who created the WebID group, must give the group access privileges in the web services that are to be used. For example, in Vortex the group can be given access to write in an area where the collaboration documents will be located.
