Documenting your finances

When applying for a student residence permit, applicants who have received an offer of admission must document their financial ability to cover living expenses in Norway.

Why and how much to deposit

In order to be granted a residence permit to Norway as a non EU/EEA citizen, the UDI requires that you show documentation that you have enough money to live on while studying in Norway.

This comes in addition to the tuition fees full degree students must pay. Please refer to our web page for further information about tuition fees.

The required amount varies depending on how long and when you are staying. For the academic year 2024/2025 the amount is:

  • Two semesters or more: NOK 151 690
  • Autumn 2024: NOK 68 950
  • Spring 2025: 82 740

*For master's degree students that applied by 15 November 2023, the UDI will accept the amount for the previous academic year. For the academic year 2023/2024 the amount was NOK NOK 137 907.

Deadline for transfer of funds to the SiO deposit account

  • 15 June for the autumn semester
  • 1 November for the spring semester

Important: It is possible to make a transfer of funds to the deposit account after the deadline, but please note that UDI require all documents to be handed in by 1 July/1 December in order for the application of residence permit to be processed in time for the semester start.

Tuition fees for full degree students

Please note that full degree students admitted to studies, will receive a separate invoice for the tuition fees. The deadline to pay the tuition fees is two weeks after you receive the invoice. You cannot pay the invoice through the UDI deposit account.

Master's degree students starting their studies autumn 2024

If you are planning to arrive in August  2024 you should start the application process and transfer the funds, as soon as you receive an offer of admission to UiO. We recommend submitting the application to the relevant Embassy/consulate/VFS by 1 June. UDI require all documents to be handed in by 1 July.

From a country with visa exemption?

If you are an exchange student from a country that Norway has a visa exemption agreement with, you should not deposit money into the SiO deposit account.  If you are uncertain, please see: Do I need a visa to enter Norway?

You can access your money through a reloadable debit card issued by the SiO Accounting Office.

In order to receive your reloadable debit card you must send an e-mail to udideposit@sio.no and book an appointment. You must send a request no later than 12.00 on Thursdays, and SiO will hand out the card on Fridays between 13.00 - 15.00.

The cards must be picked up in person at Domus Atheltica. When you first receive the card it will be loaded with 20.000 NOK.

Please remember to bring your passport. You need to have a valid ID to be able to collect the card.

Semester fee

Please note that it is not possible to pay the semester fee to UiO directly from the SiO residence permit deposit account, or by using a bank/deposit card. For information about the semester fee, please see the following web page.

Students usually pay the semester fee invoice online using internet banking, but if you do not have a bank account yet in Norway, the alternative is to pay using a bank transfer from your home bank. For more information about paying from a bank abroad, please refer to our web page.
