FIL4410 – Logic and philosophy of language with short essay

Course content
The focus of the course may vary from one year to another, but it will be based on current central problems within the philosophy of language and the philosophical aspects of logic. The seminar will be based on philosophical texts; current relevant articles as well as original texts.
Learning outcome
The aim is to give students an in depth knowledge of a specific topic in the philosophy of language or logic. Through active participation in class, students will develop the ability to express themselves in academic forms, and give qualified contributions within this specific field.
Admission

Only master degree students can formally enroll and take the course for credit.
Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
No obligatory prerequisites beyond the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway.
Teaching
28 hours of seminar.
Teaching takes place throughout the semester with two hours per week. Active participation from the students throughout the seminar is expected.
All students must have an oral presentation in class during the seminar. This is an obligatory activity that must be approved in order to sit the exam.
Examination
A 4-hours school exam and an essay of 10-15 pages à 2.300 characters, excl. bibliography. The topic must be approved of by the teacher. You submit your essay in Fronter.
When you write an essay you are entitled to receive individual tutoring. However, this requires that you submit a draft to your teacher a few weeks before the final deadline. An exact date will be given by the teacher during the seminar.
The oral presentation must also be approved in order for the students to have the right to sit the exam.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
