ENG4113 – On Metaphor
This course deals with metaphor from linguistic and cognitive perspectives and examines metaphorical expressions from word level up to discourse level. Since metaphors contribute important semantic and stylistic elements to texts, there will be emphasis on the functions of metaphor. The cognitive element will involve trying to answer the question how metaphor structures our thinking. Data will be collected from both literary and non-literary texts.
The course is intended to give students a knowledge of metaphor as a linguistic and cognitive phenomenon and to teach them ways of describing metaphor. It also aims to provide and develop skills at analysing and interpreting metaphors in different texts and at evaluating their pragmatic and communicative functions.

The course assumes a good proficiency in written and oral English. Admission to the course is required.
Recommended previous knowledge
The course assumes a good proficiency in written and oral English. It is a significant advantage if the student has taken either ENG2151 – Systemic Functional Grammar, introduction or ENG2157 – Semantics and Pragmatics prior to this course.
The course is taught throughout the semester with 2 hours per week, 28 hours in all. At the middle of the semester there is a two-week period with no teaching, which will be used for self-study and work with assignments. The students are supposed to attend the course regularly
Students will have to make an oral presentation (Pass/Fail) of a given topic and write a seminar paper of 10 standard pages. The seminar paper is graded from A to E (pass) and F (fail).
