In order to be able to follow the lectures of 11.-13. Nov, here are some IMPORTANT instructions by Jane Luu for you to follow and complete (It does not take long) BEFORE coming to class:
1) Install python and Jupyter notebook:
https://docs.jupyter.org/en/latest/install/notebook-classic.html
(Use whatever method you like).
2) Install SAOImage DS9:
https://sites.google.com/cfa.harvard.edu/saoimageds9
We will use SAOImage DS9 to display astronomy images. Astronomy images are almost always in FITS format. Double-click on a FITS image, and it should open in DS9 automatically. Or you can open DS9, then open your image (under "File" menu).
I have included images for you to play with. Both folders "ImageProcessing_ForStudents" and "CalibrationExercise_ForStudents" (on the usual Google Drive folder) contain som...
There will be no frontal AST2210 lectures on Nov 4 and Nov 5, 2026, but the room will be available for the students who wish to use this opportunity to work on their 2nd home assignment.
Dear students,
The second (graded) home assignment of the course will be explained during the frontal lectures on Oct 28 and Oct 29, with a hard submission deadline of Nov 13 (via Devilry). However, I highly recommend completing the assignment before Nov 11, so you can focus on the guest lectures and tutorial led by Professor Jane Luu that week.
Software/code requirements: QFitsView (compulsory, I will give a practical tutorial during the lectures), Python (or IDL, Matlab, etc, whatever is your preferred code to produce plots and maps), 3DBarolo (optional, no practical tutorial because the use of this software is optional).
I remind you that it is compulsory to submit both home assignments in order to be admitted to the oral exam.
Claudia
Dear students,
The first assignment has been presented and published. The material is available at the Google Drive folder. The deadline, as previously said, is set on the 5th October at noon (kl 12:00).
We have also set up a Discourse page where you can post questions about the assignment, lectures, or whatever regarding the course. I will try to reply as quickly as possible there, so that everyone can have access to the replies.
Cheers,
Leo and Claudia
The 1st home assignment will be introduced and explained during the lectures of 23 and 24 September. Attendance to these lectures is HIGHLY recommended. The assignment text, the data, and other relevant material will be uploaded on the Google Drive folder that was shared with you at the beginning of the semester. The hard deadline for submission is 5 October at noon (kl 12:00). Submission must be done via Devilry. Please remember not to identify yourself on the assignment text, since the grading will be done in an anonymous way.
Lecture on Wednesday 9 September has been cancelled by UiO because of the King's funeral.
The lecture on Thursday, September 3, 2026 is cancelled.
Dear AST2210 students,
Please remember that attending the first lecture of the course is compulsory. If you have a valid reason for not attending the first lecture on Wednesday August 19th, I need to be notified via email before the lecture.
See you soon!
Claudia
