GEO4130 – Engineering Geology and Geomechanics

Course content

Engineering (hydro-mechanical) properties of soils, rocks and fractured rock masses. Methods to determine deformation characteristics, shear strength and permeability. The importance of ground water pressures and effective stresses. Development and application of computational procedures to practical situations such as land subsidence, landslides, building foundations and tunnels.

You learn how to approach various situations related to engineering geology.

Prerequisites

Recommended previous knowledge

Introductory course in mathematics and physics/mechanics.

Overlapping courses

Teaching

Lectures, problem sessions and assigned problem sets.

Examination

Written mid term exam, final exam (3 hours) and course problem sets will count for ca. 30%, 50% and 20%, respectively, of the final grade. Both examinations must be passed.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Explanations and appeals

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
