GEO4310 – Stochastic methods in hydrology

Course content

The course is in particular directed towards master students of hydrology and geosciences who need knowledge of statistics and stochastic methods beyond an introductory course for their thesis work. In the course advanced statistical and stochastic methods that are commonly used in analysing hydrological data series and stochastic modelling of hydrological processes at spatial and temporal domain will be discussed and exemplified using data from hydrology and geosciences.

Learning outcome

The student learns how to:

  • analyze hydrological and climatological data using advance statistical methods
  • perform quality control of data, analyze and classify types of hydrological time series (stationary, non-stationary, white noise, etc)
  • perform frequency analysis of extreme values of precipitation, floods, low flow
  • perform hypotheses testing, goodness-of-fit testing
  • stochastic modelling of hydrological processes at spatial and temporal domain

Recommended previous knowledge

Bachelor courses in basic mathematics, statistics and hydrology/meteorology/climatology/physical geography.

Attendance at the first lecture is compulsory. Students who fail to meet, are considered to have withdrawn from the course unless they have previously given notice to the Studies administration, email address:


A number of exercises and assignments are examined and count 50% together of the final score. A written exam at the end of the course counts 50%.

Exam questions will only be written in English.

Language of examination

In this course any written exam questions or assignment questions may be available in English only.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Explanations and appeals

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses: GEO9310, GEO4300 – Geophysical Data ScienceGEO9300 – Geophysical Data Science.
