Vacancy: Student job – improving teaching materials for BIOS4910iGEM

Your motivation and personal qualities:

Are you creative and innovative and interested in student-active learning?

Do you want to participate in further developing the course in synthetic biology — BIOS4910iGEM — and help future UiO iGEM teams to become even more successful than the previous ones?

Use your professional competence to develop good innovative learning resources for the interdisciplinary UiOslo student team participating in the iGEM competition through the course BIOS4910iGEM!

Work tasks:

You will help to develop learning resources and teaching materials for the iGEM course. There is a recurrent need within iGEM for learning resources on various generic and interdisciplinary skills (listed below), but systematic documentation and high-quality materials for these are lacking at the moment.

Starting in spring 2021 and continuously until November, you will follow the current team and help prepare relevant materials as they go along with their project. You will contribute solutions for innovative teamwork, and produce materials that can be used also for future teams. The overall work load is expected to be 150 h.

The materials that are needed include mainly lecture slides and other documentation for the following tentative workshop topics:

- What is Synthetic Biology? (core teaching materials already available)

- What are the molecular biology techniques relevant to standard iGEM projects (core teaching materials already available)

- Oral Presentation Skills

- How to make a perfect Poster Presentation

- How to program a team Wiki in iGEM (teaching for this has been done every year but without teaching materials)

- Visualization of scientific content (photo/video/graphics)

- How to efficiently use Social Media to promote iGEM projects

- How to interact with Sponsors

- Time management and Project management skills

- Software tools for collaborative work, including data and literature management

- Judging Criteria in iGEM (some materials already available)

Your qualifications:

- A completed MSc degree, ideally within the natural sciences. Applications form students who have not fully completed their degree might be considered if they are highly qualified.

- Available immediately and until November 2021 at least once per week (to be discussed in detail)

- Fluent in English language (oral and written)

- Documented experience and interest in synthetic biology or related fields

- It is an advantage if you have been part of an iGEM team previously, or if you have participated in other types of student innovation or student competition activities

- It is an advantage if you have documented teaching experience

- Good digital competence in general, including digital publishing and social media

- It is an advantage to have experience with web design and basic HTML programming

What we offer:

- An interesting year together with dedicated students and supervisors.

- An hourly-based salary (Ltr 42, ca. 150 hours)

- A versatile and flexible job that will boost your CV.
