Course content

This course provides an overview over the most common services and components found in IT infrastructures in medium- to large-sized organisations and businesses. The services focus on the internal functions of the IT department, such as backup, issue tracking, configuration management and inventory and directory systems. The course is organised around weekly practical lab sessions and lectures that complement each other. The student gains hands-on experience with the technologies as well as a holistic perspective of IT infrastructures.

Learning outcome

The student should have the following outcomes upon completing the course:


Upon successful completion of the course, the student:

  • has advanced knowledge of how system administration and operations facilitate organisations
  • has advanced knowledge of processes applied to system administration in order to facilitate requests from other parts of an organisation
  • has in-depth knowledge of how an IT infrastructure is organised and what components it traditionally comprises
  • has a good understanding of the support architecture of an IT infrastructure, such as backup, issue tracking, and configuration management

Upon successful completion of the course, the student:

  • can analyse an IT infrastructure with regard to its components and their purpose
  • can apply feature analysis in order to rank alternative components relative to their purpose
  • can organise the flow of tasks in an operations team
  • can propose ways to measure the performance of an operations team
  • can leverage IaaS (cloud computing and virtual infrastructures) to provide systems, network and storage components to users
  • can utilise infrastructure support services in order to leverage system deployment to users
General competence

Upon successful completion of the course, the student:

  • can discuss the role of system administration in an organisation and society at large
  • can analyse how operations can interface with the rest of an organisation in order to improve overall proficiency


Only master students in the masterprogram Network and System Administration can be admitted to this course

Overlapping courses

10 ECTS overlap with MS017A Infrastructure Service and Operations from OsloMet—Oslo Metropolitan University.


This course feature weekly lectures and lab sessions to provide both theoretical and hands-on content. Students work in groups of two or three and complete assignments. The students supplement the lectures and lab sessions with their own reading.

Students are given two mandatory assignments during the semester. These involve a technical setup along with a report of about 10 pages. Both assignments must be completed to a satisfactory level in order to qualify for the exam.Rules for mandatory assignments 


Three hours written exam. Mandatory assignments must be passed prior to the exam.

No examination support material is allowed.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
