I made some notes on the cup product structure in the cohomology of the torus T = M_1 and the projective plane RP^2 = N_1.  These are a little simpler than Hatcher's treatment of the general surfaces M_g and N_h.

For those participating in the lectures, the mandatory assignment will be to present a total of two exercises from Hatcher's book.  We start September 21th with Exercises 1, 2 from Section 3.2, marked as 1* and 2* in the lecture schedule.  You may volunteer for one of these on September 14th.

PS: If you are not following the lectures, but plan to take the exam, please write to rognes@math.uio.no and let me know whether you already have a completed mandatory assignment from an earlier year, or if you need to submit a written assignment for this year.
