SGO9206B – The implications of covid-19 for socially inclusive transformations to sustainability B
Course content
This PhD course focuses on socially-inclusive and sustainable responses to COVID-19. Lectures will emphasize the social, economic, political, and environmental implications of the COVID-19 pandemic, with particular attention to equitable and inclusive responses to both the pandemic and sustainability challenges in urban areas. Participants are requested to apply insights on and approaches to socially-inclusive responses to their own work, which does not have to be specifically linked to the covid-19 pandemic.
The course is organized by Per Gunnar Røe and Karen O’ Brien from the Department of Sociology and Human Geography at the University of Oslo.
Per Gunnar Røe is Professor of Human Geography at the University of Oslo. His current research focuses on the social implications of urban sustainability and planning, and how to develop equitable and socially inclusive strategies.
Karen O'Brien is Professor of Human Geography at the University of Oslo. Her current research focuses on transformations to sustainability, and how alternative paradigms, politics, and practices can contribute to generating equitable and inclusive responses to global environmental change.
Robin Leichenko is Professor of Geography at Rutgers University and co-Director of the Rutgers Climate Institute. She is also co-chair of the New York City Panel on Climate Change (NPCC). Her current research is focused on incorporating equity into climate change adaptation planning in New York and elsewhere.
Roger Keil is Professor and Research Chair in Global Sub/Urban Studies at York University in Toronto. He was the Principal Investigator of the Major Collaborative Research Initiative on Global Suburbanisms (2010-19). His current research focuses on global suburbanization, urban political ecology and regional governance.
Lars Böcker is Senior Researcher and Human Geographer at the Institute for Transport Economics in Oslo. His current research focuses on travel behaviour, urban metabolism, sustainable urban planning, climate/weather and the sharing economy.
Admission
The course will be open to applications from all interested PhD students nationally and internationally.
All PhD students (included students at the Department of Sociology and Human Geography) register for the course by filling out this application form. Registration is binding and not possible without sending in your project description. The registration deadline is three weeks prior the course, that is November 16th 2020.

Teaching
This course is full-digital and going to be set up via Zoom Webinar. The link to the webinar is going to be sent to all registered participants.
The course will run during one week, including lectures and interactive seminars. Lectures will include group discussions in break-out-rooms.
