ECON3725 – Population Health
This course is equivalent with ECON4725 – Population Health
The course includes two small modules, one on indicators of the mortality level and the health situation in a population and another on future health challenges. Additionally, there are four larger modules:
i) Mortality differences between rich countries
ii) How education, income and income inequality influence health and mortality
iii) The importance of family and children for health and mortality
iv) How children’s health and morality are affected by parents’ age, number of siblings and family stability.
You will learn about:
- The construction of indicators of the mortality level and the health situation in a population.
- Mortality differences between rich countries and the reasons for these
- How education, income and income inequality influence health and mortality and (without much detail) the methods used to analyse this.
- The importance of family and children for health and mortality.
- Future health challenges
In addition to obtaining knowledge about the health situation in rich countries, including some of its most important social determinants, you will get experience with reading (and to some extent finding) original scientific literature of quite different types. This will make it easier for you to stay updated in the area.
The course will give you knowledge about several issues related to population health and help you stay updated. This will be a valuable platform not only to those who plan to take more specialized or advanced courses in population health later, or who want to work in this area, but also to those primarily oriented towards neighbouring medical or social science disciplines such as demography, health sociology/economics, epidemiology, and public health.

Recommended previous knowledge
- Students who do not have ECON1710 – Demografi - grunnemne or equivalent are advised not to take this course.

Compulsory tuition activities:
- A compulsory term paper.
If the compulsory term paper is not approved, you may be given a second attempt to hand in a new term paper/improve the term paper within a short deadline.
When the compulsory term paper is approved, the result will be registered. The term paper will be valid for 8 consecutive semesters.
Candidates who have passed the course before autumn 2016 and wish to re-take the exam need to get the term paper approved before they can re-take the exam.
Absence from compulsory tuition activities
If you are ill or have another valid reason for being absent from compulsory tuition activities, your absence may be approved or the compulsory activity may be postponed.
Normally, this course has a 3-hour written school exam.
For the spring 2020 applies:
The examination will be a home examination in Inspera. The home exam will be an open-book exam, where all written and printed resources as well as technical support is allowed. The time schedule will be published on the semester page.
You must have passed the mandatory activities in order to sit for the exam.

You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
