SOSANT2250 – Anthropological perspectives on Norway and the Nordic countries

Course content
The course includes an introduction to topics such as what is the ethnographic region called Norden and what are the topics anthropologists have singled out as typical for this region. The course highlights notions about gender, social class, attitudes about nature and recourse use and harvest.
The historical, political and cultural background of contemporary Nordic societies, regional variation and some academic debates concerning the characteristic of this region are included in the curriculum and treated during lectures.
The course is relevant for both Norwegian and foreign exchange students.
Learning outcome
In addition to insight into the subject tematic, emphasis is placed on developing independent academic reflection in both the written and spoken form.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
SOSANT1000 - Innføring i sosialantropologi is a prerequisite for the course. Students who have not previously passed SOSANT1000 - Innføring i sosialantropologi must pass this exam the same semester they take SOSANT2250.
For international exchange students the prerequisite is a course equivalent to SOSANT1000 or 30 ECTS credits (one semester) of university level courses in social sciences. You may apply for admission to SOSANT2250 by sending an email to henvendelser@sai.uio.no. Please attach the required documentation.
Recommended previous knowledge
This course requires good knowledge of English.
Teaching
The course builds on active preparation and participation on the part of students.
The teaching is not compulsory, though it is highly recommended to participate.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination
Students will be evaluated on the basis of a take-home exam at the end of the course. Students will receive letter grades. The exam questions are in English and must be answered in English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination
Withdrawal from an examination
A student can sit for this exam up to 3 times. If a student wishes to withdraw from the exam, s/he must do this in StudentWeb at least two weeks prior to the first day of the exam. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit for the exam.
