Course description
Course content
The course aims at enhancing students’ understanding and capacity to apply qualitative and/or quantitative methods, mixed methods and statistics. The specific focus of the course will partly emerge from the choice by students of topic for their dissertation.
Learning outcome
This course aims at preparing students to select and design appropriate research instruments for developing their thesis and other research results.
Admission
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

The Comparative and International Education Programme is open to all students who fulfil the basic requirements above. The main target groups are international students, for example students under the 'Quota' Programme (developing countries), NOMA scholarship students from developing countries, partner institutions, Erasmus students and NORDPLUS students. Norwegian students are also encouraged to apply.
All students in the 3rd semester of the program have equal access to the course. Other applicants may be considered if there is capacity.
Only students who have been admitted to the course may take part in the lectures, seminars and examination.
Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Students are required to have passed all previous methods courses.
Teaching
The course consists of lectures, seminars and workshops.
There is a mandatory 80% attendance requirements for all courses. If a student does not fullfill the mandatory attendance requirement, they will need to complete an additional assignment prior to passing the course. Students must pass the first introductory course in order to continue in the programme.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination
The exam consists of a written paper. Requirements and deadlines will be announced at the beginning of the course. Students will receive a preliminary evalution of pass/fail. Students who fail the preliminary evaluation will have the possibility to rewrite their paper.

Language of examination
The examination language is English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.
The assignment will count as the entire portion of the final course grade.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
