Course content

This course gives an introduction to the regional and social accents of English spoken in the British Isles. It provides an overview of the ways in which pronunciation varies in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, and includes detailed study of some specific accents in each of these countries.

Learning outcomes

After completing this course you will have:

  • acquired knowledge about accent variation in English, with emphasis on varieties spoken in the British Isles;
  • gained an understanding of the correlation between pronunciation and its social and cultural significance.

The examination in this course is not available for external candidates. Only students admitted to the course may sit for the examination.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisites

Students should have passed the course ENG1103 - English Phonetics and Intonation, An Introduction, ENG1101 - English Phonetics and Intonation, An Introduction or have equivalent knowledge of English phonetics.

Recommended prior knowledge

This course presupposes a good proficiency in written and spoken English. It is also necessary for students to have acquired a good knowledge of English phonetics or General phonetics. A course in English Pronunciation or Spoken English is not sufficient.

Overlap

This course overlaps with ENG4159 - Accents of English in the British Isles.

Teaching

Seminar, 2 hours per week for 14 weeks, 28 hours in all.

Students are expected to participate by contributing to discussions in class, handing in written work and presenting topics orally.

Students are required to hand in a paper of an acceptable standard by a set deadline during the semester to be allowed to take the exam.

80% attendance is required.

Exam information

The grade will be based on a 4-hour written examination.

Assessment and grading

Course grades are awarded on a descending scale using alphabetic grades from A to E for passes and F for fail. Read more about the grading system .

Possibility of make-up exams and re-takes

You can usually resit an exam, but the conditions depend on whether you had a valid reason for absence from the regular exam. Read more about resitting an exam .

Withdrawing from exams and limits on re-takes

A student can sit for this exam up to 3 times. If a student wishes to withdraw from the exam, s/he must do this in StudentWeb at least two weeks prior to the first day of the exam. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit for the exam.

Exam options for students with special needs

Students may apply for access to alternative exam resources or exam forms on the basis of chronic illness and/or special needs that create a marked disadvantage to other students in the exam situation. Mothers who are breastfeeding may apply for extra time to complete the exam.
