Course content

We look into the future of IT research, development and entrepreneurship through the eyes of Doug Engelbart, the famous inventor; we survey and explore his not yet widely understood and implemented ideas. Can information technology help us solve global and other challenges by making human systems ‘collectively intelligent’? We invite you to contribute to and learn through Program for the Future Challenge. This seminar will bring you in contact with international participants, experts and some of Doug’s former colleagues.

Learning outcome

After completing this course, you will know about:

  • Models, frameworks, practices and techniques for ‘augmenting the human / collective intellect’ (such as Dynamic Knowledge Repository)
  • Models, frameworks, practices and techniques for developing collectively intelligent sociotechnical systems, such as bootstrapping
  • Using information technology to support solutions to large contemporary issues
  • The kinds of challenges that innovators / explorers in this area confront – and strategies or practices for addressing these challenges

Admission

PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through Studentweb.

If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.

PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must apply for a position as a visiting student within a given deadline.

Teaching

Weekly 3 hours lectures and dialog. Independent project work. The independent project must be completed during the course.

Examination

Oral exam with project presentation and individual examination in curriculum.

The mandatory assignments must be approved prior to the exam.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
