How to use AI as a student
Artificial intelligence (AI) can be a useful tool in your studies. Here you will find common rules for AI use at UiO, information about recommended AI tools, and useful resources.
Basic rules for using artificial intelligence (AI) as a student
- We recommend that, as a student, you only use UiO’s approved AI services in your work. This ensures that your conversations are not shared further.
- Avoid sensitive information and copyrighted material in AI tools that have not been approved.
- Use AI for inspiration and support, not to produce your work. Your submissions must reflect your own knowledge and interpretation.
- Clearly state when and how you have used AI in assignments and submissions.
- AI can be a supplement for understanding topics, course literature, and terminology, but always verify information against reliable sources.
- The rules for using artificial intelligence will vary between courses and assignments. Always ask your instructor if you are unsure about what is permitted.

AI use and cheating
It is easy to feel uncertain about where the line is drawn between acceptable use of AI and cheating. The starting point is simple: AI use that the course permits, and that you are transparent about, is not cheating.
If you are in doubt about whether a specific use is acceptable, ask your instructor.
AI tools in your studies
We recommend that you use one of the services approved by UiO, as this keeps your data safe. Neither personal data nor the data you enter will be shared further. Conversations will also not be used to train future models.
GPT UiO is recommended as the first choice for students. If you need web searches or want the AI to produce files rather than just text, you can try Gemini or Microsoft Copilot Chat. Gemini Notebook is useful if you will be working extensively with documents.
