Course content

No loner given, but some of the contents are taught in GEF2500 – Geophysical Fluid Mechanics (discontinued).

Introduction to how simple solutions of the equations of motion can describe oscillations and currents in the ocean. Also transfer of heat and salt is discussed, as well as the formation of sea ice.

Learning outcome

Based on fluid mechanics, you will solve simple equations for the motion in the ocean, and apply these to phenomena such as inertial oscillations, geostrophic currents, and the Ekman current. Simple formulae for the transfer of heat and salt are derived. They are used to calculate the vertical temperature distribution in the ocean, and to determine how fast the sea ice grows in thickness.

Admission

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

In addition to fulfilling the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway, you must either have 2MX/2MY/3MZ and 3MX/3FY/3KJ/3BI/(2KJ+3BT)/(2BI+3BT) from Norwegian upper secondary school, or have completed equivalent studies in mathematics as well as physics, or chemistry, or biology at upper secondary school or university level at another educational institution. Read more about fulfilling special requirements.

Recommended previous knowledge

Elementary mathematics, elementary fluid mechanics and some descriptive oceanography, GEF1600 – Physical oceanography (discontinued), MEK1100 – Vector Calculus

Overlapping courses

5 credits overlap with GEF2500 – Geophysical Fluid Mechanics (discontinued)

Students completing GEF 2600 will receive 10 credits for old GF 161. Students completing GEF 1600 + GEF 2600 will not receive any credits for old GF 161.

Teaching

Lectures and colloquial/group work. Submission of 4 obligatory home assignments during the course. These must be approved before you can take the final exam.

Examination

One oral exam at the end of term, counts 100%. Letter grades (A-F).

This course does not offer new examination in the beginning of the subsequent term for candidates who withdraw during an ordinary examination or fail an ordinary examination. For general information about new examinations, see /studier/admin/eksamen/sykdom-utsatt/mn/index.html and www.matnat.uio.no/english/studies/examination/repeat.html

General information about examinations at the faculty can be found at www.matnat.uio.no/english/studies/index.html
