Course content

Historical introduction, interaction between living organisms and the environment, energy carriers, air pollutants and their effects (climate, smog, acid deposition etc), water and water pollutants, radioactivity, environmental organic chemistry (pesticides, pheromones etc.), working environment.

Learning outcome

The students shall become acquainted with the main environmental problems and obtain an understanding of the role of chemistry in this context, learn how organisms are affected by chemicals in the environment and how chemical knowledge can be used to solve the problems. Through the course the students shall learn to give balanced assessments of positive and negative aspects of recent environmental trends.

Teaching

Lectures (40 hours), group activities (5 hours). The students shall, usually in groups, write an essay on an environmental issue.

Examination

Written exam and evaluation of the essay.
