Course content

• The development of leadership and management theory
• A comparison and evaluation (critical discussion) of some of the most influential leadership and management theories
• Understanding leadership and management practice using case studies

Learning outcome

This course explores the rich field of management as a science and an art. It will discuss some of the most influential theories of management, both historically and systematically, and look at how they fit the various managerial challenges posed by the health sector. It will also look at leadership and management practice, based on case studies and seminars. The course is also designed so as to give the students an opportunity to understand and develop their own potential as leaders and managers.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

None

Recommended previous knowledge

Basic knowledge of how health care services is managed and organized (HLED1102 or similar)

Knowledge of Classfronter

Teaching

Lectures and seminars with 3 mandatory short essays delivered by Classfronter prior to the semninars. The short essays will be critical assessment of and elaboration on the literature.

Examination

3 mandatory short essays and a final written exam.

The students must pass all three essays to be allowed to sit for the written exam. If an essay fails, the student may re-submit it within a week.

The mandatory assignment must be handed in electronically and will be subject to electronic screening for potential plagiarism. Failure to meet academic standards for reference to sources or plagiarism – whether intentional or not – will be prosecuted according to the University of Oslo’s regulations (Forskrift om studier og eksamener ved Universititetet i Oslo, §9) and may result in severe consequences such as expulsion from the University.

Language of examination

All written exams and term papers at the master's programme in Health Economics, Policy and Management have to be conducted in English

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

The three essay are awarded either a passing or failing grade. The pass/fail scale is applied as an independent scale with only two possible results.

Explanations and appeals

Resit an examination

In this course the exam is regularly scheduled each semester. It is not arranged make-up exam in this course, cf. § 5.5 i Forskrift om studier og eksamener ved Universitetet i Oslo.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
