SGO4601 – Economic geography: Institutions, evolution and sustainability transitions

Course content

This course builds upon topics that were introduced in SGO2200 – Economic globalisation and regional development and SGO3200 – Sustainability Transitions, Innovation and Social Change. It provides an introduction to new directions in theory such as evolutionary economic geography and addresses institutions and the dynamics between the local and global. Thematically it delves into debates over environmental sustainability transitions, a more environmentally aware economic geography and empirical examples .

Learning outcome

Knowledge aims

  • The ability to provide a thorough account of and to discuss central concepts such as evolution and institutions in economic geography.
  • An understanding of the dynamics between actors on different geographical levels such as local, global and national.
  • To know some of the recent literature on sustainability, transitions and green innovations within economic geography.

Learning aim

The aim of course is to lay the foundation for the theoretically informed analysis in the master theses.

Admission

This course is a part of the Master's program in Human Geography.

Students who are admitted to study programmes or individual courses at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in StudentWeb.

The course is designed for both Norwegian students and students on exchange programmes or bilateral agreements. All teaching will be given in English.

Recommended previous knowledge

The course builds upon SGO2200 – Economic globalisation and regional development og SGO3100 – By- og regional utvikling (discontinued).

Overlapping courses

If you have taken SGO4016 – Økonomisk geografi (discontinued) or SGO312, you cannot take SGO4601.

Teaching

The teaching consists of both lectures and seminars.

Examination

6-hour written exam.

Examination support material

Students may use dictionaries at this exam. Dictionaries must be handed in before the examination. Please read regulations for dictionaries permitted at the examination.

Language of examination

The 6-hour school exam will be given in English only. The students can choose whether they will answer the exam questions in English, Norwegian, Swedish or Danish.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination

If you are sick or have another valid reason for not attending the regular exam, we offer a postponed exam later in the same semester.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
