Course content
The course covers four relevant topics within social ecology for critical in-depth discussions, based on a selection of articles. The thematic content will vary.
Learning outcome
Updating participants on relevant socio-ecological topics, as well as helping to develop participants’ skills in carrying out a critical analysis of scientific issues from different points of view.
Admission
PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through Studentweb.
If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.
PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must apply for a position as a visiting student within a given deadline.

Teaching
The course consists of five meetings during the semester. One new topic will be addressed at each meeting. The topic will be introduced in a lecture given by a teacher. Based on a list of proposed articles, the students shall discuss the topic. The students, divided into groups if necessary, shall give an introductory presentation, which is to be followed by a plenary discussion, to one topic each. One hour of counselling with the teacher is offered in the work with an introductory presentation.
Examination
Contribution to one introductory presentation (power point, pass/fail) and participation in plenary discussions (based upon mandatory presence). Hand in of essay on relevant community ecology topic.
