KJM9000 – Analysis and Structure Determination I (LC-MS)

Schedule, syllabus and examination date

Course content

The course covers fundamental aspects of the hyphenation of liquid chromatography (LC) and mass spectrometry (MS), including requirements for mobile- and stationary phases, ionization techniques, mass analyzers, system optimization, calibration, data acquisition, structure determination, miniaturization, strategies for method development and area of application. Basic sample preparation-, LC- and MS theory of importance to LC-MS hyphenation will be briefly refreshed.

Learning outcome

Learning outcomes:
When you have completed this course:

  • you can develop adequate strategies for method development by use of LC-MS
  • you can use LC-MS as a scientific tool in you own research project
  • you can compile and give a seminar about a given topic.

Admission

PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through Studentweb.

If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.

PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must apply for a position as a visiting student within a given deadline.

Prerequisites

Recommended previous knowledge

General knowledge on basic LC and MS theory.

Teaching

This is an intensive course of 30 class hours within 1 week from Monday through Friday. It contains 10 hours lectures, 10 hours symposium and 10 hours laboratory activities including excursion to external high throughput LC-MS laboratory. You will also have to prepare and give a seminar on given topic. You have to pass the seminar in order to pass the course. A maximum of 20 students will be admitted. 80% obligatory attendance.

The course is structured according to the workshop principle, requiring active participation from the students especially during symposiums and laboratory activities. Symposium tasks will be selected from relevant scientific papers.

The first lecture is mandatory. If you are unable to join, the Expedition Office has to be informed in advance (phone 22 85 54 46 e-mail ekspedisjonen@kjemi.uio.no). If you fail to register as an active student for the course in either of these ways, you will loose the access to the course for the given semester.

As the teaching involves laboratory and/or field work, you should consider taking out a separate travel and personal risk insurance. Read about your insurance cover as a student.

Access to teaching

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Examination

Active participation in class as well as presentation of completed exercises and laboratory assignments counts 80 % of the final grade. You also have to prepare and give a seminar on a given topic. The seminar counts 20 % of the final grade, and you must pass in order to pass the course. Please be aware that 80 % attendance is required to pass the course.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.
