Exchange through Erasmus+

Did you know that Erasmus+ is a European exchange programme with a budget of 14 billion Euros in the current programme period? All UiO students on exchange through Erasmus+ can receive a grant for studies at partner universities in the 28 EU countries, the three EEA countries, and UiO partners in Macedonia, Serbia and Turkey.

Note! Due to COVID-19, valid health insurance and travel insurance is mandatory in order to receive an Erasmus+ grant.

Most of the exchange agreements between UiO and European partner universities are part of the Erasmus+ programme. See all agreements.

Language Assessment

Most students have to complete a free online language assessment before the exchange period, through the system Online Linguistic Support (OLS). The test will determine your proficiency level in the language you will use during your semester abroad, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR). You take a new test after the exchange period which allows you to measure the progress made during your stay abroad.

How does it work?

UiO will send you a login and a password by email to access the OLS assessment.

The host institution will not be able to access the results of the language assessment without your consent, and the results will not prevent you from taking part in Erasmus+.

If your result is B1 or lower, you will automatically receive an invitation to a free online language course in the OLS system. If your result is C2, the highest possible score, you will not be asked to complete a second assessment after the exchange period.

Sign the Grant Agreement

Before you can receive the grant, you have to sign and submit an Erasmus+ Grant Agreement.

UiO will send you the Grant Agreement by email in May/June for exchange in the autumn semester, and November/December for exchange in the spring semester.

Learning agreement

The Learning Agreement states which courses you will take abroad. Read the procedure for recognition at your faculty.

The Learning Agreement is your guarantee that courses taken abroad will be recognised as part of your degree at UiO. It also confirms that the courses you plan to take are offered at the host institution and available to you.

Your faculty at UiO will send you the Learning Agreement by email prior to departure. The Learning Agreement must be signed by you, the agreement coordinator at UiO, and your host institution.

If you make changes in the course selection you must update the Learning Agreement and get the changes approved by UiO.

Equal opportunities - additional support

Erasmus+ aims to offer equal opportunities for all. This means that students with special needs and students coming from disadvantaged backgrounds can receive additional funding in order to facilitate the exchange. If you think you might qualify for additional funding you can contact the Erasmus team at Due to data privacy and protection we ask that you do not send sensitive information by email.

Grant payments

The Erasmus grant is meant to cover some of the extra costs related to studying abroad, but is not meant to finance the semester in full. The grant amount is based on your destination and the duration of your semester.

How much can I receive?

For the academic year 2021-2022:

  • € 460 per month for Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Sweden and the UK*
  • € 410 per month for all other programme countries

*After spring 2022, students on exchange to the UK will no longer receive an Erasmus+ grant. For autumn 2022, UiO will award a grant of 10 000 NOK for students on exchange to an Erasmus+ partner university in the UK. The amount is a single one-time payment. It has not been confirmed whether this grant will also be offered in spring 2023.

Your grant is also based on the duration of your stay:

  • Start date: the first day you are required to be present at the host institution, for example first day of class or a welcome event.
  • End date: the last day you are required to be present at the host institution, for example last day of exams.

The host institution must confirm the start and end date. If you travel to the host country earlier than required, for a language course or similar, you will not receive grant support for this period. This also applies if you decide to stay in the host country after the confirmed end date.

How and when will I receive the grant?

As a rule, the grant is paid in two instalments:

  • 70% is paid after submission of the Confirmation of Erasmus+ Exchange Period.
  • 30% is paid after your exchange is completed and the final report is submitted.

Note that the grant is paid through the UiO salary system. The amount will be marked as salary, and UiO will automatically collect your electronic tax card. However, this is a standardised automatic procedure, and you are not required to pay tax.

UiO will transfer the amount in NOK to your Norwegian bank account. We use a standard exchange rate from Euro to NOK that is determined when we receive the funding from the European Commision. You are responsible for covering potential transaction costs, for example related to an account abroad.

UiO receives EU funding per academic year. If you plan to exchange for a full year, from spring semester to autumn semester, you will receive support for one semester at a time.

What if I cancel the exchange?

If you decide to withdraw from the exchange semester before two months have passed, you will have to pay back the grant in full. If you withdraw after two months, you keep an amount equal to the period you completed. It is important that you notify the Erasmus team and the relevant faculty or institute at UiO.

If you have to cancel the exchange due to illness, you can apply to keep all or parts of the grant. You must document the illness with a note from your GP.

Contact if this is the case, but do not send sensitive information.

Confirmation from host institution

The host institution must sign a confirmation as soon as possible after your arrival in order to confirm the duration of the exchange semester.
