Required documents for self-financed applicants

All applicants must upload scanned copies of their supporting documents into the University of Oslo's online application system, Søknadsweb. Please make sure you have provided everything that is asked for and upload the documents requested. Please name your uploaded files as suggested in the tables below.

Recognition procedure for applicants without verifiable documentation

If you have completed education from Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iraq, Yemen, Liberia, Libya, Sierra Leone or Somalia, you must apply for recognition of your education from HK-dir before you can apply for admission to the University of Oslo.

HK-dir has a specific recognition procedure for persons without verifiable documentation (the UVD-procedure).

You must have a valid residence permit in Norway in order to be eligible for the UVD-procedure.

Secondary education

Required document Description
Documentation of completed secondary education

Admission to Bachelor-level studies is based primarily on your secondary school/high school papers. 

Applicants from EU/EEA countries must submit their secondary school papers to show they meet the English language requirements, unless they submit another type of English documentation.

A scanned copy of the original diploma/certificate must be uploaded.

Note: applicants for Norwegian courses must upload transcripts from secondary school.

If the original language of your documents is not English, German, Danish or Swedish, an official translation made by an authorized translator must be uploaded. Please note that the original language version must always accompany the translation.

Statement of purpose

Statement of purpose

Your statement of purpose should be one page, typed, double spaced (max. 400 words). Tell us why the course is important to you, how it helps you fulfill future goals or how it relates to your current studies or employment. Briefly state your personal qualities that make you a good representative of your country.

Applicants to Norwegian Levels 3 and 4 must write their statement of purpose in Norwegian. Applicants to Norwegian courses who are currently taking NORA courses do not have to submit a Statement of purpose.

Applicants to Norwegian language level I are not required to document any prior experience with Norwegian.

Applicants to Norwegian language levels II, III or IV should submit a copy of transcripts or test scores of previous Norwegian courses or exams.

Important about documentation

  • Upload documents preferably in PDF or JPG format in the online application portal (Søknadsweb) by the application deadline.
  • When uploading documents, you acknowledge that the University of Oslo may contact the issuing institution for verification.
  • Submission of fraudulent documents is illegal, and will be reported to the proper authorities and may lead to dismissal and loss of right to study. You are liable for uploading true and unaltered documents.
