Course content

Research and Writing Training in History is composed of three modules that will stretch over three semesters and will consist of a series of workshops and peer-reviewed group exercises. It is designed to help students to acquire necessary techniques in advanced bibliographical and archival research, project design, and academic writing. It will accompany and support students in all stages of the process leading towards the final thesis. During the first semester students will focus on research, the use of archives and various other resources of historical work. In the second semester the module will be about general aspects and problems related to the writing of a master thesis. During the third and last module, students engage with questions related to the development of research designs. All three modules encourage students to work with the development of their own thesis projects both individually and in a cooperative framework.

Learning outcome

 After you have taken this course you are expected to:

  • have profound theoretical and practical knowledge about various techniques and methods relevant for the writing of a master thesis
  • be able to work on your own thesis projects both individually as well as in a cooperative setting
  • apply the theoretical and practical knowledge with regard to thesis writing, research techniques and the development of research designs your own thesis projects

The course is only available to students accepted to Modern International and Transnational History (master's two years).


Recommended previous knowledge

A good ability to read and understand English is required for this course.


Seminar teaching and off-classroom group teaching. In the third semester the module will take the form of 1-2 day seminars at the beginning and/or the end of the semester and cooperative work organized via online platforms in between. Students are working on cooperative formats via blogs and wikis throughout all three modules.

The course is assessed by a portfolio with the submission of smaller individual and cooperative working papers.

The assignment(s) should be complete with a front page containing the following information:

  • candidate number and name
  • course code
  • title
  • name of department (Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History)
  • semester (spring/autumn), year

Submission of assignment: 

  • You submit your portfolio in Inspera.
  • The file must be submitted in pdf-format and we stress that the student is responsible for making sure that the files are readable. If you need assistance in converting your file into pdf, we recommend that you follow these instructions.
  • The students are responsible to make sure that the documents are complete upon submitting them in Inspera. The submissions will be assessed in the form by which they are uploaded by the students. Unreadable or incomplete documents are assessed as they are.
  • The file must be named with your candidate number (not your name) and the course code (MITRA4020)

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
