IRSK2400 – Special topic in Celtic Studies

Course content

This course builds on the knowledge base established in IRSK1300 – Irsk middelalderlitteratur og IRSK2200 – Introduction to Old Irish / IRSK4200 – Introduction to Old Irish (or similar) to deepen students’ knowledge of a specific branch of Celtic philology. Topics will vary, but the course will typically focus on a major genre or cycle, such as The Finn Cycle, The Ulster Cycle, or hagiography, or on an important theme. Close readings of texts in the original language, with particular attention paid to improving students’ skills in the relevant philological methods, will be the primary focus of the course

Learning outcome

After passing this course you will be able to:

• use philological methods on Celtic sources
• analyze the textual and linguistic features of the sources
• contextualize texts in their cultural and historical contexts

• 10 credits overlap with IRSK4400 – Special Topic in Celtic Studies.

Teaching

Teaching is given in the form of seminars and will amount to 28 hours in total.

The obligatory activities consists of preparation and engaged discussion of assigned readings in class, and in-class translation of texts.

Access to teaching

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Examination

At the end of the course, each student is to hand in a semester assignment, which the student has been working with throughout the whole semester.

The assignment will comprise of roughly 10 pages.

Language of examination

You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
