Course content

An introductory study of normalized and unnormalized Norse prose texts. An introduction to palaeography and codicology.

Learning outcome

Students will develop skills in reading and understanding Norse texts. They will become familiar with the most important variables in the text material such as geographical and chronological variation. They will be able to normalize a simple text and will develop a certain level of skill in reading manuscripts. They will also acquire knowledge about the transmission of the source texts.

Teaching

The course will consist of one two-hour seminar per week over 15 weeks, including study weeks. A smaller qualification assignment must be approved by the course teacher before students may be entered for the examination.

Access to teaching

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Examination

The examination consists of a three-day take-home examination at the end of the semester. The examination should comprise a maximum of approx. 18.400 keystrokes excluding spaces (8 pages).

Language of examination

You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. If you would prefer to have the exam text in English, you may apply to the course administrators.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
