Course content

This course gives an advanced introduction to the theory and methodology of corpus use in English language research. There is also great emphasis on practical experience of the use of corpora.

Through problem-oriented exercises students will learn how to use electronic text corpora in different types of language studies. The course includes practice in the use of corpus analysis software and the database program FileMaker Pro.

Learning outcome

After completing this course you will:

  • be familiar with a range of English-language corpora.
  • have deep insight into the background and current status of corpus linguistics in English language Research.
  • have extensive experience in the use of corpora.
  • understand how to select and work with electronic text corpora for different types of language studies.
  • know how to use computer tools for analysing and handling corpus data.
  • know how to exploit corpora as a tool for continued language learning.

This course is for students admitted to the master programmes European Languages (master's two years), Linguistics and its Applications for a Multilingual Society (master's two years) (being phased out), and Lektorprogrammet (master - 5 år).

Students enrolled in other master's degree programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

The examination in this course is not available for external candidates. Only students admitted to the course may sit for the examination.


The course is taught throughout the semester with a 2-hour seminar per week for 12 weeks.

Obligatory activities:

  • Attendance is obligatory at least 10 out of 12 seminars.
  • Two obligatory assignments (one essay and a short paper containing the topic for the term paper and a list of selected reading in connection with this).
  • Additional absences must be justified to the exam coordinator. Read more about rules concerning valid excuses and how to apply for approved absences or postponements. Please note that absence exceeding 50 % of all seminars may not be approved, regardless of any excuses.


The assessment of the course is based on a term paper of approximately ten pages (4000 words). The topic for the term paper will be decided by the teacher and student together.

Beforehand, students will be given an opportunity to submit a draft of the term paper and receive individual feedback on both the form and content of the draft.

The term paper is the basis for the grade in this course.

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
