MUS2630 – Thinking Through Music: History, Aesthetics, and Philosophy

Schedule, syllabus and examination date

Course content

Musical engagement produces new forms of knowledge and offers vital insights into what it is to be human - connected to others, to our communities and the world we inhabit. Through critical inquiry, this course will explore how music helps us think through some of the most pressing and precarious questions of our time, including threats to democratic life, climate change, and the status of knowledge in a post-truth world. Teaching will draw on examples from a diverse range of genres and musical practices - including contemporary discourse around AI-generated music - exploring how music as experience, text and cultural practice forms our historical and philosophical worldviews.

Learning outcome

After completing the course, you will:

  • understand key ideas in music history, philosophy, aesthetics, and the theory of knowledge, and their relevance in the 21st century.
  • possess in-depth knowledge of selected musical practices and how they illuminate our understanding of knowledge production, human experience, and the world we live in.
  • be able to carry out independent and critical analyses of musical examples and contemporary societal challenges.
  • be able to communicate relevant academic material clearly in both written and oral form.
